Welcome to Veterans Kitchen, Inc

Veterans Kitchen, Inc. is a 501(c)3 Hampton Roads Charity, created for the purpose of helping end veteran homelessness. We partnered with the Veterans Administration HUD-VASH program in 2014 to assist our veterans with the transition of homelessness into their new homes.

Since our beginning, we have developed relationships with most cities in Hampton Roads and several community organizations that provide assistance to homeless veterans in obtaining a home and their general well-being. Together with the case workers we help make the transition for the veterans a pleasant process.

We strive to end homelessness among our veterans and provide them with the tools they need to live a healthy and stable life.

Providing for Our Veterans

Since our beginning to date (March 2018) we have helped over 400 veterans transition into their new homes.

We provide all kitchen items they will need to prepare healthy meals: cookware, plates, utensils, cutlery, glasses, etc. We also provide them with about 20 household items: cleaning products, dish detergent, pot holders, shower curtain and hooks, saran wrap, aluminum foil, etc. Toaster Ovens, crock pots, coffee pots, microwaves are other household items are other items we provide when funds are available. We want to help them get a fresh start and be successful and not becoming homeless again.

Homeless Veterans by the Numbers

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) states that the nation’s homeless veterans are predominantly male, with roughly 9% being female. The majority are single; live in urban areas; and suffer from mental illness, alcohol and/or substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. About 11% of the adult homeless population are veterans.

Roughly 45% of all homeless veterans are African American or Hispanic, despite only accounting for 10.4% and 3.4% of the U.S. veteran population, respectively.

Homeless veterans are younger on average than the total veteran population. Approximately 9% are between the ages of 18 and 30, and 41% are between the ages of 31 and 50. Conversely, only 5% of all veterans are between the ages of 18 and 30, and less than 23% are between 31 and 50.
